The year 1956 has been engraved in the annals of Elliot Road as a memorable one when the Loreto Educational Society decided to set up a school in the area with a three fold mission- to open its doors to the Anglo - Indian Community, many of whom have thereafter settled abroad and doing quite well - to develop in essence the perennial mission of Loreto that is ' Education and emancipation' of the girl child - and to inculcate the true spirit of Mary Ward by catering to the "humblest of the humble, the poorest of the poor."

Hence, at a historic moment in 1956, Loreto Elliot Road spread out her wings under the able stewardship of Sr. M. Gertrude. Since then, spanning a period of 56 years, the school has grown, from strength to strength and every Principal has made her own contribution, crossing obstacles and paving new paths while shaping her destiny.

There have been several milestones along the way, some of which deserve special mention - the Silver Jubliee, celebrated in 1981 with a grand Dance Drama -'The Messiah' - and the year long celebration of the Golden Jubilee in 2006 beginning with a beautiful Thanksgiving Mass, followed by an exhibition, and Alumnae Re-union, finally concluding with a spectacular sports in the Junior School on Nature's Charisma and the staging of the musical 'Perkie and the Prince' by the Senior School girls in the school auditorium. This was followed by a dinner for the teachers and their families.

.............Years have rolled by and times have changed and the school has geared up to meet the demands of the hour.........

Our present Principal, (Sr.) A. Nirmala joined the school in 2012. She has been working at a sure and steady pace, towards achieving a number of difficult goals she set up as her aim. Armed with a strong resolve in her mind and a dream in her heart she set to work, and has achieved, among other things- a new wing in the Junior School building, housing a library and several classrooms to meet the paucity of space in the Senior School- a spacious night shelter for the Rainbow children- and living accommodation for nuns .Under her guidance, there has been a tangible growth apparent in all areas - among the staff, being empowered with training and workshops, the children, learning through activities and excursions and a common interaction between the two in the classroom, on the stage, on the grounds and in the digital lab.The school website was launched under her.

Laurels have been won by students at several levels in various times, a few of which may deserve mention - Ishita Jhawar's article was selected in the Albert Barrow Creative Writing Competition and published in their souvenir, Shamreen Iram and Vrinda Jhawar reached the National level of the Frank Anthony Memorial Debate, Bushra Alam reached the National level as a 'Wiz Kid' and Agnijita Mukherjee and Cheynelle P. Stephens visited Japan and the USA to read their papers under the aegis of Taru Mitra.

Special mention must be made of a very special event. In commemoration of the poet, dramatist and the greatest educationist of all times, Rabindranath Tagore, the school celebrated his sesquicentennial birthday with an offering of songs and dances entitled 'Salutation' at the Kalamandir Auditorium in September 2010.It was an extraordinary show involving all the students of the Senior School who performed, for the first time , outside school, a grandeur that was indeed a befitting tribute to the transcendental genius of Tagore.

2011 saw a unique sports presented by the Junior School at the Loreto Entally grounds on the theme of Christmas. It was unique in concept and excellent in presentation. Sr. Tressia was the Chief Guest while we were honoured by such dignitaries as Sr. Tina, Sr. Alice Mary and Sr. Cecily. They remarked on the tone of the sports as a perfect combination of skill and discipline which was all the more remarkable since it was a Junior School Venture. A congratulatory response came from the parents and other guests as well.

The Exhibition on Social Science was par excellence - with displays of hand crafted materials and wonderful charts, backed by the children actively participating with songs, dances and dramatics. Scenes were enacted and visual shows were put up, arousing an ecstatic response from the Loreto Sisters, parents and other guests. The very air was vibrant with enthusiasm and joy!

A School is very much like a tree - its roots go down very deep into the soil of the past while sudden bursts of colourful flowers peep into the future skies, celebrating youth and change. May Loreto, Elliot Road, while growing and branching out, never forget her past traditions, her lineage and her identity!
